Ytterbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet crystal (Yb:YAG) is a laser material usually used in DPSS lasers because of its great overall performance. It can be pumped at 940 nm or 969 nm and emit 1030 nm. This material is more suitable for diode-pumping than the traditional Nd-doped systems. Compared with the commonly used Nd:YAG crystals, Yb:YAG crystals has a much larger absorption bandwidth, a longer upper-laser level lifetime, and three to four times lower thermal loading per unit pump power. In addition, Yb:YAG second harmonic at 515nm may replace Ar-ion laser which emits at 514nm.
