Titanium:sapphire is a metal doped gain material used in tunable lasers and femtosecond solid-state lasers. Ti:sapphire lasers quickly replaced most dye lasers, which had previously dominated in the fields of ultrashort pulse generation and wavelength tunable lasers. Ti:sapphire solid state lasers are very reliable compered to neodymium or ytterbium doped lasers. Ti:sapphire can easily be tuned to the needed pump wavelength. These lasers can work with very high brightness pump because of their perfect beam quality at high power.
